5K in 50 States

This page will track my progress on doing 5k’s in all 50 states. Why would I even want to do this you ask? You can see the initial post here, but basically I am battling back from injuries and a large dose of laziness, to being more active and spending time outdoors. Our new lifestyle supports moving around and I needed a fun way to be active (and also support some great causes out there!) While Keith is supportive, he’s saving his energy to hit the trails & bike – running doesn’t do it for him. He does promise to cheer me on, which is all that matters!

Update: When we visited Sea Rim Island in Texas, I thought it would be ‘fun’ to twist my left ankle (the bad one of course!), and twist it is bad enough I had to stay off it for days. Two weeks later in New Mexico, I started slow, using Week 1 Day 1 to see how the ankle would hold up. I couldn’t get past the 3rd 30 second jog. Waiting another two weeks, I set out in Arizona to try Week 1 Day 1 again. Success! No pain, but boy do you lose endurance quickly taking a month off. I am now in the process of ramping back up and hope to run another 5k in the near future!

3/08/13

Update…and a year later. Still no additional 5k’s. I’ve stopped & started the program a few times, but seem to run into injuries by week 2 or 3. On the plus side, for the entire time I was living in downtown Portland, I walked everywhere – including 3 miles a day to get to & from work. I’m taking the re-introduction to jogging even slower this time around and the 5k runs may turn into 5k walk/runs – but that’s okay. It’s still about the challenge and getting outside to exercise!

Oregon – Earth Day Run in Tigard on April 21, 2013 – Finished 47:41
