(Almost) on the set of Grimm

Posted by on February 9, 2013

Living in downtown Portland has been fun, and the fact that several shows film here makes it even more interesting. The area where I work was used for the show Leverage, and through our trips walking around this past summer we passed by several of their sets. We’ve run into Portlandia star Fred Armisen in the garage & elevator in our building, and Cacao is right outside – talk about a reminder every day of that skit (along with the Zoobomb sculpture I walk past daily that is featured in the opening credits)!

We especially like Grimm – mostly because as we traveled across country after making a decision to make Portland our destination, we got a glimpse of our soon-to-be new city every Friday night. If you are looking for a great site that breaks down Grimm episodes & locations, check out the South Waterfront blog.

Grimm films at a diner that I walk past to get to work, and they have also filmed at the church we can see from our window. We’ve wandered past a few other location spots as well over the last year. A few of the Grimm stars even work out in our building.

This is usually Sultan's Cafe...not a diner!

Earlier this week we got a notice from our building that all night this Friday, there would be BRIGHT lights as they are filming on our corner. Sweet! Not sure if our building will make it in the final cut, but it will be fun to watch from our window the production of a show.

On a funny note, our dog Samantha is less than impressed with the Grimm set this time around. They have set up camp in her poop spot – not cool! But even funnier, is she NEVER barks at people – it’s usually random dogs she’s out to ‘warn’. As I walked her to the corner this morning, she started barking, so I look around for the dog. None to be found. We then crossed the street & she keeps going – barking pretty insistently now at this one set guard. Weird – and in fact two ladies walking across the street that are familiar with Samantha even remarked she never barks like this.

There can only be one reason. The guard was obviously a Wesen. A Bludbad if I had to guess. ;)

We say “cacao” at every possible opportunity.

What do you think of Portland? I hear good things, but we worked hard to escape gray, so I’d hate to be sucked into it again.

Cacao! :) Portland is awesome, and if we didn’t have such wanderlust, I could see us moving in downtown & never leaving. It’s that great. The cloudiness is better than what we experienced in upstate NY. In Rochester, we wouldn’t see sun for weeks, with temps below zero for weeks, and I had serious seasonal depression issues. While the winter isn’t ‘sunny’ here, it’s been worlds better. There are sunbursts here, which means you at least get to see the sun for a time period most days. If you need mostly sun, the winters here might still suck although on the other side of the mountains you can usually find it – the winter has been sunny enough we haven’t needed to make the trip. The summer was downright beautiful with no rain for months. If you haven’t been to Portland, I highly recommend a visit to the city & the surrounding area!

Even though I am permanently traveling I still consider Portland my second home; as opposed to wherever I am right now. Someday, if I ever decide to stay put, Portland will be it!

I can see why. We are totally charmed with the city and sometimes we wish we were a bit more ‘normal’ and could just settle down & enjoy it. Alas, the road calls – but it’s nice to know there is a place to call home when you are ready right?
