The Portland Timbers – Our First Professional Soccer Game

Posted by on June 11, 2012

I say this with love. Soccer fans are bat shit crazy. I mean seriously CRAZY.

Keith has been more a fan of soccer than I have, but I am always up for a live sporting event. Since Jeld-Wen field is just a few blocks away, we knew we had to take in a game before the season ended.

I had been ‘warned’ about the Timbers Army and how passionate they are, but seeing the fans live. WOW. I must admit however, by the end of the game I wished I was sitting a little closer to where the Army was – they were having much more fun than our section!

The game started with the star spangled banner and it was then I realized how important the scarves are that everyone seemed to be wearing. Nothing like a stadium of synchronized scarves to put you in the mood for a game!

The game itself was great, and it was a rare win for the Timbers, but the Army stole the show for me. They literally did not stop chanting and singing, and flag & scarf waving the entire game. Like – non stop. All the beer consumed was probably sweated off the first 20 minutes. A chainsaw was used to cut off a circle of tree for each goal, green smoke, the hatred for the refs which seemed to favor the other team – the energy in the place was incredible.

Crazy (but fun!) environment

Have you seen or read Harry Potter? It was exactly the same fervor as a Quidditch game. We’ll take in another game, and now we know to inch a little closer to the real show.
